Today has been a day. It seems that every power tool I used today broke or died. I went to Lowes and replaced one and it died while I was using it. I have to take it back on Tuesday or Wednesday. Emmie wanted to powerwash the sidewalk and it died also. It seems the part that the cord wraps around will not turn now to release the cord. This reminds me that when sin entered the world, everything became broken. Our planet, our bodies, our health, and sin and death entered this world.
This reminds me of Jesus’ words in Luke 12:24, “Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap; they have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them; how much more valuable you are than the birds!” (NASB). Nature to me is a work of art by God. Today, we spend so much of our time on our digital devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers and TV, we never pay much attention to God’s work in nature. We neglect to see the beauty in spring flowers and trees blooming their beauty to the glory of God. We neglect to see God’s work in little critters such as squirrels, opossums, racoons, robins, cardinals, foxes and even your pets.
We get so caught up in our lives, our work, our school, our marriages, and our children and/or grandchildren, we miss God’s handiwork on display all around us. And if we have unexpected powertool failures, we get distracted in repairing or replacing them. We can study God’s Word about nature or better, we can take some time to sit and observe God’s work for us.
Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (NASB). This verse says that God is speaking and He is speaking loudly through nature to us. The question is: are we listening? We see the glory of God in nature and we have the word of God in Scripture. This means we all need to see the glory of God in nature and the word of God in Scripture. Meaning – we should appreciate God’s glory in this world He has given us. You can almost see David in Psalm 19:1 looking up at the sky at night on his back in some field taking it all in in appreciation to God. It is almost as if he was looking at some giant mega-tron or Omnimax and is just in awe of God’s power, God’s glory and God’s handiwork.
For example, did you know that God created what is called the magnetosphere, a magnetic field that is 36,000 miles above the earth protects our planet from solar particles of radiation from our planet. Some of these particles funnel down to the North and South Poles where they create the aurora borealis and aurora australis, the northern and southern lights. God is an amazing electrical engineer who designed this magnetosphere to make the skies beautiful as it protects our planet.
New Testament scholar J.A, Johnson, quitting other authors, writes this: “On February 27, 2013 a team of astronomers published data on a super-massive black hole at the center of galaxy NGC 1365. Based on data from two X-ray telescopes, they calculated that the black hole was 3,000,000 kilometers across, and its outer edges were spinning near the speed of light (Souce: First Glimpse). The pull of a black hole this size is so powerful it can disrupt an entire galaxy. How much more powerful is the God who created it? We should be impressed when we see the power and majesty of God in the universe he has made. The word “glory” has the sense of being weighty or important. Glory is “that asset which makes people or individuals, and even objects, impressive” (Source: Gerhard von Rad, Old Testament Theology, Vol 1, p. 239, quoted in Hoffmeier, “Limits of General Revelation”, pp 19- 20). God has revealed how important he is through his glory in creation (Source: J.A. Johnson, Preaching The Word Bible Commentary, “The Psalms: Rejoice, The Lord Is King, Psalm 1-41, p. 205).
Assignment: This week, take some time to go outside at night and just take in God’s handiwork by looking at the stars. Or, go down to the beach at night and just listen to the waves crashing on the shore over the dark horizon. Or, take a walk through some garden, admiring all the different flowers and plants God created. They all are unique and different. Admire God by admiring nature He created for us. Something will break this week, so deal with it by appreciating how God’s creation works just like clock work.
Scripture To Meditate On: Psalm 8:3-4, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; (4) What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?” (NASB).
Prayer To Pray: “Dear Lord, there is no question that you are an artist. I am so sorry that I get so caught up in my own world that I forget to appreciate the world You created for me. Things will break but I do not need to let this keep me from seeing Your handiwork in nature and Your Word in Scripture. Thank You for this world of ours even though we broke it. I love You Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
