Good day Southside. It's Thursday. Wisdom is something that some say we acquire through experience rather than a class. We may gain some “street wisdom” that way but the godly wisdom can only come from God. James writes this in James 1:5, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (NASB). God is more than willing to give us wisdom if we ask Him. The words “let him ask” is in Greek what we call an imperative – a command. We are commanded by God to ask Him for wisdom. Unfortunately, many of us think we are wise in our own eyes to know what to do. Look below at the following verses and how they warn us about our own wisdom:
When we go to the Book of Proverbs, it is more than just wise sayings from one man – Solomon. But it’s more than the musings of one man, or even the collected wisdom of the Jewish people. It is a response from God to Solomon’s request for wisdom. God was so pleased by Solomon’s humble request that He supernaturally inspired Solomon with wisdom and insight greater than any who had come before or who would come after.
So, when we read the book of Proverbs, we are not just reading the good ideas of some smart guy. We are reaping the benefits of what God poured into Solomon’s life. It’s a remarkable privilege and a wonderful portrayal of how God can use a person across time. Solomon lived over 3,000 years ago and the wisdom God gave him we are using it today.
Assignment: Before you make a major decision, stop and pray, asking God to give you His wisdom on which direction to go before you just plow into the decision on your own. Right now, what is a decision you have to make either financially, relationally, educationally, morally, spiritually, emotionally, vocationally, and etc.? God inspired James to let us know that if we ask God for wisdom, He will give it to us generously. This means we really do not have a valid excuse for making the incorrect or wrong decision.
Scripture To Meditate On: Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. (6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight” (NASB).
Prayer To Pray: “Heavenly Father, thank You for Your wisdom and the revelation of Your character, which we find in Proverbs—simple but profound counsel that stands the test of time. Thank You for the gift of Your Word, which is a steadfast and true guide to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
I love you Southside!--Pastor Kelly
